“The course of true love never did run smooth.”

“The course of true love never did run smooth.” - William Shakespeare

This sentiment common to modern time, comes from William Shakespeare’s play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Although many people have rephrased this quote to conform to the change in time, no one said it more beautifully than Shakespeare himself.

In the play, the quote was used in scene which involved the characters Hermia and Lysander.  The two characters are in love, and in the scene the quote is used to describe the trials faced by those in love. Even though Shakespeare’s words were used centuries ago, they are still completely relevant even in today’s modern world.

It seems that over time, media such as movies, TV, and music have created a false image of love in the minds of many young people in the world. In most romantic movies for example, love is portrayed as simple rather than a complex thing. But in reality, love is very complex and comes with many complications.

In Shakespeare’s quote he does not say that any kind of love never runs smooth, instead he says “true love never did run smooth”. Through the use of his careful word choice, he implies that the more true the love is, the more complicated the relationship will be. For instance, married couples who are often times in love usually have the most complex relationships and sometimes need to go through counseling in order to maintain their relationship.

True love is not easy and never will be. If anyone plans on having a successful relationship, this concept must be understood. True love will come with its ups and downs and people have to be able to handle this, because like Shakespeare said,  “The course of true love never did run smooth”.
